Five Ways to Help Your Youth Group Engage with the Bible During Covid-19

How can we keep fuelling our young people on their journey of faith?

By helping them grow in their ownership of their faith we will be helping them build foundations for the long haul. Helping young people engage with the Bible is a given, but what does that look like over social media and video chats?

If you’re looking to read a book of the Bible together as a youth group (virtually), here are a few tips:

1. LET THEM KNOW!

This sounds a bit simple… But by giving some warning and by communicating which book you’ll be reading really helps to build some anticipation! You could even do an Instagram poll to see which book the group wants to read together.

2. SHARE AN OVERVIEW FROM THE BIBLE PROJECT

The Bible Project is an amazing resource! Their YouTube channel features video overviews for each book of the Bible – and they’re all really clear, beautifully made and brilliantly engaging! Find the video for the book you’ll be reading to give everyone some context as they jump in.

3. SHARE TOOLS

It can be all too easy to assume that people already know exactly how to engage with the Bible, but chances are they are they might not really know where to start. SOAP (Scripture, Observation, Application, Pray) is a great way to unpack a particular passage. Or, check out our Celebration of Discipline blog on Meditation.

4. JOURNEY TOGETHER

Create a WhatsApp group for those who are most keen to explore the Bible together and ask each person to post what spoke to them that day. Remember it’s always good to go first to show that you’re doing it too! You could also ask for volunteers to post a short video of their reflections each day on your youth Instagram.

5. KEEP GOING

Don’t be discouraged if it doesn’t seem like everyone is jumping on board right away. There is often more going on beneath the surface! The more we can give tools to our young people to access the word of God themselves, the better. So once you’ve finished one book, pick another and keep going.

We’d love to hear your experiences exploring vulnerability with your youth group! Send us an email or come along to one of our online youth leader gatherings.
